The Last speech of the Holy Prophet (pbuh)
In the 10th year after Hijrat to Madinah, Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) went for pilgrimage and delivered his last sermon to a huge gathering of Muslims. He was on a camel and the people around him were from all the tribes of Arabia.
The last sermon is an everlasting message for the whole of mankind.
Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) said
“All praise is for Allah. I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, the One, Who has no partner with Him. His is the sovereignty and to Him is due all praise. He grants life and causes death and is powerful over everything. There is no god but Allah, the One, He fulfdled His promise and granted victory to the believers and He alone routed the enemies of Islam. ”
“O people! Listen to my words for I do not know whether I shall be able to meet you again next year. O people! Allah says, “We created you from one male and one female and made you into tribes and nations so as to be known to one another. Verily, in the sight of Allah, the most honoured amongst you is the one who is most righteous. There is no superiority for an Arab over a non- Arab, norfor a white over a black, nor for a black over a white except in good deeds and righteousness. All mankind is the progeny of Adam, and Adam was fashioned out of clay’’Do not appear before Allah with the burden of evils of this world around your necks, whereas other people may appear happy expecting the rewards of Paradise. In that case, none would be able to help you.
O people! The blood, the wealth and the honour of a Muslim are sacred and inviolable till the Day of Judgement just as this day , this month in which fighting was prohibited and this city are sacred in the sight of Allah. Verily, you will soon meet your Lord and you will be held answerable for your actions.
O people! You have got certain rights over your women and your women have certain rights over you Treat them kindly, for they are your helpers and they are not in a position to manage their affairs themselves. Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them on the security of Allah and have made their persons lawful unto you by the words of Allah.
Beware! No one committing a crime is responsible for it but himself. Neither the child is responsible for the crime of his father, nor the father is responsible for the crime of his child.
No one has the right to the wealth and property of another except with the lawful permission of the owner. So do not wrong yourselves.
O people! Every Muslim is a brother of another Muslim and the Muslims form one brotherhood. And your slaves! See that you feed them with such food as you eat yourselves, and clothe them with clothes that you yourselves wear.
And do not become disbelievers after me that you start killing one another O people! No messenger will be raised after me and no new ummat
would be formed after you.
Verily, I have left amongst you that which will never lead you astray, the
Book of Allah, which if you hold fast, you shall never go astray Behold,
worship your Lord, offer prayer five times a day, observe fast in the month of Ramazan, pay Zakat on your property, perform pilgrimage and obey your rulers and you will be admitted to Paradise.
Let him who is present, convey it to him who is absent ”
At the end of the sermon, he asked the people, “On the day of judgement, when you will be asked about me whether I had conveyed the message of Allah, what would you say? ”
They replied: “We bear witness that you have conveyed the commands of Allah to us and you have given us the guidance and the instructions.”
Thereupon, the Holy Prophetpbuh lifted his forefinger towards the sky and repeated thrice:
“O my Lord! You be witness to this. ”
The Holy Prophet’s(pbuh) sermon shows that he knew that this was going to be his last speech on the occasion of Haj. When the Holy Prophet(pbuh) finished his sermon, he received the following revelation. “This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. ”
